Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. — Galatians 6:9

On September 16th, we were blessed to welcome Dan Silverman to Covered Bridge. From the moment he arrived, Dan fit right in. His ambitious spirit and lively personality have brought a refreshing sense of family and joy to the house. We’re deeply grateful for his presence — and even more so that he’s willing to share his story with us!

I laugh a lot—maybe too much for some people. Every time I do something absentminded, clumsy, or just plain ridiculous, I giggle like a lunatic. On an average day, that can add up to a lot of giggling! I laugh because I’m far too joyful to keep it bottled up inside. I’m alive, free, and looking forward to eternity in the presence of the Lord. That is why I laugh, chuckle, and giggle in joyful gratitude all day long.

It wasn’t always like this. I remember being in the sixth grade when our class was assigned to write a few paragraphs under the title “What it’s like to be me.” My entire essay was only two words: “It hurts.” That’s all I could think of to describe being me—it hurt. I knew fear, darkness, loneliness, and hopelessness. They all hurt. I grew into pain, rage, addiction, violence, asylums, rehabs, hatred, hospitals, torture, and prison. They hurt too.

That life led me to a six-year sentence in a Vermont correctional facility for the sale and possession of cocaine, fentanyl, and amphetamines. I was strung out to the brink of death, and though I wasn’t exactly suicidal, I wasn’t exactly opposed to dying either—because it hurt.

Today I know that God’s unfathomable hand of grace was at work, but at the time I couldn’t have told you why I decided to go to Bible study when the unit officer announced it. There I met Pastor David Piers, who comes into the work camp weekly to share the Word of God. When Pastor told me about the infinite love and protection God gives to His children, I exploded—sure that He had withheld that love and protection from me in my darkest hour.

Week after week, Pastor patiently led me to look at my life from a different perspective. He helped me face the truth of my own guilt, the depravity of my sinfulness before a holy God, and the desperate need I had for a Savior.

Pastor walked me through repentance to the cross of Christ, where I finally stopped struggling, gave up the anger and shame, and trusted in Jesus as the Lord of my heart; where I learned that He always did love and protect me—even when I’m alone or afraid, from everlasting to everlasting. Even when it hurts.

Today I am no longer a prisoner—not of the state, nor of sin, nor of addiction, nor of the past. I am a child of God and a resident of Covered Bridge. Pastor Dave remains my great mentor and dear friend. So please forgive me if I laugh and giggle my joy a bit too much. But I am sober, I am hopeful, I am loved—and it feels so good!

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope”. -Jeremiah 29:11

Our Harvest Banquet Fundraiser was a beautiful celebration of gratitude and hope!

This year’s banquet was more than a gathering; it was a powerful beginning to our season of generosity. Whether you joined us in person or supported us from afar through your prayers and gifts, we are deeply grateful. Your faithfulness made the evening a true success and helped launch a time of giving that will carry through the holidays and into the new year.

As we look ahead to Giving Tuesday and our end-of-year giving season, we’re filled with gratitude for the impact your partnership makes every day. Because of your continued support, men in recovery are finding renewed dignity, hope, and faith as they rebuild their lives.

Together, we are planting seeds of transformation and reaping a harvest that will bear fruit for years to come. Scan the code below to visit our website and learn more about our Season of Giving — or to make your gift today!

Alongside these updates on Covered Bridge, these photos capture the heart behind it all. The summer and fall have been filled with moments of growth, fellowship, and purpose — from church involvement and community service to times of rest and brotherhood. The men of Covered Bridge have poured their hearts into a variety of ministry opportunities, both within the home and throughout the surrounding area. Whether attending new meetings, partnering with local groups, or helping neighbors with projects big and small, their commitment to serving others and growing together continues to shine. These photos offer just a glimpse into the life, joy, and connection shared over the past season.

Spiritual State of CB

Men continue to get saved, discipled and set free at CB.  It has been a joy to be able to minister to our new residents, Tony and Dan.   One has a PhD and the other has been in and out of prison much of his life.  They come from such different backgrounds but are still both gripped with the fallout from a non-discriminatory opiate addiction.  Their backgrounds could be considered polar opposites.  However, the underlying issues are common to all men—sin, a false identity, believing lies, led by vows, unable to break free from strongholds and tormented by demonic activity.  Fortunately, God addressed these issues thousands of years ago in His Word and left a helper, the Holy Spirit, to overcome these common issues that many of us have to wrestle with.  Praise the Lord that these men and many others have overcome the evil one by the Blood of the Lamb, the word of their testimony and their refusal to love their lives to the death.

Work Camp Outreach

The CB work camp bible study continues to bear fruit.  Dan Silverman, who was saved almost 2 years ago, finally made his way to CB.  His story (previous page) is amazing.  His first interaction at Bible study was a bit confrontational as he expressed pain from childhood abuse, rejection and neglect complicated with his own rebellion and poor choices. Dan went on to get saved and signed up for many discipleship courses where he began maturing in his relationship with his Heavenly Father.  Like the woman at the well, he led others to Christ but didn’t stop there —he began to disciple them. Praise God!!!

Fundraiser

Our fall fundraiser was a great success.  There were many highlights.  My favorite was when Deputy Engel from the Essex County Sheriff office spoke a few words encouraging our men to walk the straight and narrow.  Their office was instrumental in helping Raul make his way to CB, directing him to our safe haven to find healing and help as he awaits his day in court.  Over 70 people attended the fundraiser, and God provided $10,080 through his faithful servants.  Our first fiscal quarter was in the black.  Praise God!!

State of finances

Several of the men who have recently arrived at Covered Bridge have had no financial resources. They need your help. Would you prayerfully consider sponsoring a man for his first two months at Covered Bridge ($950)? This support would allow him to focus on growing in his relationship with God without the burden of worrying about room and board. After that, most residents begin working part-time and contribute on average $475 per month toward their stay.

Double your Impact This Giving Tuesday

As we enter this season of gratitude and generosity, we’re looking ahead to Giving Tuesday on December 2nd — a day dedicated to giving back and making a difference. After a successful banquet and a year full of service from our residents, we’re eager to keep that momentum going.

Historically, Covered Bridge faces an annual challenge to raise nearly $72,000 (half of our yearly budget) by July 1st. As Giving Tuesday approaches, we invite you to pray and consider how God might lead you to give from the harvest He’s provided. Your gift helps men find healing and renewed life through a growing relationship with Jesus.

We’re praising the Lord for a matching grant that doubles donations through December 31! Your Giving Tuesday and year-end gifts can go twice as far to support the work happening every day at Covered Bridge Recovery Home.

One additional option:  You could reduce your tax liability by gifting your highly appreciated stock. Scan the QR code to the left for information needed to begin a year end stock transfer, or call me at 802-473-8498!

God is our Provider and Sustainer. Thank you for your love, prayers, and generosity that make this ministry possible!

Raul

I would like prayer for finding employment and prayer that I would keep God close to my heart. I would like to praise God for my growth, His sovereignty, grace, and the second chance He’s given me.

Dan

In my zeal for the Lord, I sometimes fail to “be swift to hear, slow to speak” (James 1:19). Please pray that I mature in this area—that I might maintain enthusiasm while growing in the self-control born of the Holy Spirit.

When I consider where I rightly deserve to be forever, all I can do is look to the cross of our Lord with adoration and amazement and thank Him for drawing me from death to life.

Tony

Please keep me in your prayers as I seek a closer relationship with God and His guidance in my life. I’m asking for healing from my addiction, depression, and anxiety as I walk this journey of recovery. Please also pray for reconciliation with my children— that God would restore our relationship with love, forgiveness, and understanding.

I thank God for the incredible work He is doing in my life. He is breaking strongholds that once kept me bound and filling me with a new sense of freedom. I thank Him for giving me understanding and opening my eyes to His truth. I’m grateful to those He placed in my path— who support, encourage, and help me grow closer to Him.

A Heartfelt Tribute: Honoring a Life, Reflecting God’s Love

We thank God for Colleen Abram, who honored her mother Ruth Sweeney’s memory by directing gifts to Covered Bridge. Her kindness shines as a reflection of His love and comfort.
