He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul.
– Psalm 23:2-3
My name is Mark Roose, and I was born and raised in Wisconsin. I grew up in a Catholic family, attending church most Sundays, but as I got older, I gradually drifted away from my faith.
Sports were a big part of my life growing up. I enjoyed playing and watching them and collecting sports cards. Then, during my junior year of high school, I had my first drink.
At the time, alcohol seemed harmless—something social and fun. But when I went away to college, it began taking on a much bigger role. I bounced between several colleges searching for the right fit, but looking back, my real priority had become drinking, partying, and having a good time.
While in college, I met my future wife, and together we began building our life. We had good jobs, great friends, and eventually built a home in Tomah, Wisconsin. From the outside, everything seemed to be falling into place. We thought we had life figured out—but one thing was missing from mine: God.
I eventually returned to school at night to finish my bachelor’s degree in Organizational Management and Marketing. It was important to me that my children grow up knowing both of their parents had earned college degrees. I graduated in 2008, the same year the first of our three beautiful children was born.
Life seemed almost perfectly lined up. I had a family I loved, a home, a good career, great friends, a college degree, and an active life that included running marathons. Alcohol was there too, but it still seemed like a simple pleasure—just another part of the life I was enjoying.
Somewhere along the way, that changed. On the outside, I was still functioning, but underneath, things were slipping away as drinking became alcohol abuse. I went from being a marathon runner and active family man to watching the life I had built begin to unravel. Alcohol was changing me and taking everything from me.
My marriage ended in divorce in 2016. I went to rehab in 2017 but relapsed almost immediately. By 2018, I had reached another turning point and came to Covered Bridge, once again trying to get my life back on track.
It was there that something different happened. I was saved and began developing a real relationship with Jesus Christ. I grew spiritually and began to understand what it meant to live differently. For the first time in a long time, I had hope and confidence because I was beginning to understand where that hope came from.
After graduating and returning to Wisconsin, I didn’t maintain my relationship with Jesus, build a strong support system, or find a church where I could continue growing. Slowly, I returned to my old vices.
The years that followed became a cycle of alcohol abuse, isolation, jobs that came and went, and new legal problems that put me in and out of jail. Eventually, I reached the end of myself.
I knew I needed more than another attempt to get sober. I needed God at the center of my life—not only when things were falling apart, but in every part of it. I needed to return to the One who had given me hope in the first place.
I returned to Covered Bridge in May of this year knowing that simply getting sober wasn’t enough. Today, I am rebuilding my relationship with Christ, surrounding myself with like-minded people, attending church regularly, and spending more time in God’s Word than I have in years.
One of my greatest hopes is to rebuild my relationships with my children and be part of their lives again. I know that cannot happen simply because I want it to. I have to trust God with the process and His timing while I remain faithful, continue growing, and become the man and father He is calling me to be.
For years, I tried to take control of my own life, and alcohol slowly took that life away from me. Today, I have been given another opportunity, and I don’t want to waste it.
My hope is no longer based on having the perfect job, the perfect home, or everything in my life perfectly lined up. My hope is in Jesus Christ. As I continue walking alongside Him, one day at a time, I trust that He will lead me where I need to go.
WOW, see what God can do!! It is amazing what is emerging out of Covered Bridge. When most men come to Covered Bridge, they are lacking spiritually in many areas.
Tony was one. Although he had earned his Ph.D., his life was in shambles. Although he had attended many rehabs, he was not able to live a consistent, productive life.
Tony was saved at age 18 but drifted away from the message of Christ that HE is our HOPE. Tony was convinced that earning a PhD would “right the ship” and allow him to experience the American/Swedish dream. The opposite occurred.
Finally, while working through Giants, discipleship groups, and individual counseling at CB, his heart and mind were healed and became at peace with God and the world around him. Fortunately for us (the body of Christ), God is in the process of downloading something different into Tony’s heart and mind.
Tony is in the process of creating a new biblically-based curriculum that is being presented every Friday evening at UBC at a gathering called LIVING HOPE. It is a Bible-based, Christ-centered, Holy Spirit powered meeting to help us learn and apply the rich lessons in the Bible to everyday practical living.
This is not focused on recovery but any life-controlling issue that brings us down and separates us from Christ who is our LIVING HOPE. Anyone, no matter where they are in their walk with Christ, can learn and grow from attending. We believe that after all of the lessons are finished, 52 of them, that other churches will be able to utilize Living Hope materials to bring healing and hope to their church and communities. Others are also working on Living Hope that need to be mentioned: Sean Tymecki, Dan Silverman, and others who all play important, key roles in making Living Hope a beautiful, productive experience.
I hope you enjoy the overview and “sneak peek” of some of the LIVING HOPE materials in this newsletter!
I am thankful for God’s continued work in various ways in and through each of the men at Covered Bridge. Thank you for praying for them, supporting them, and encouraging them.
Starting in April of this year, we began taking a closer look at the recovery meeting already taking place at UBC on Friday nights. Recovery from alcohol and drugs is incredibly important, but we recognized that there was more that needed to be addressed.
Getting sober doesn’t automatically heal a broken relationship, loneliness, shame, anger, fear, grief, or the wounds of the past. Many of the struggles that keep us stuck aren’t unique to addiction at all. We began asking how we could address those deeper issues through the truth of Scripture and a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
That conversation became the beginning of Living Hope.
We envisioned a Christ-centered weekly gathering where people could show up, honestly talk about the things we often don’t talk about, learn what God’s Word has to say, and encourage one another as we grow. Recovery would remain part of the conversation, but Living Hope would reach beyond alcohol and drugs to the struggles that affect all of us.
Over the months that followed, Tony Durkee began to spearhead the idea, which would grow into a complete program. Still being developed are 13 Journeys (topics), with four Stops (focuses) each—totaling 52 weekly lessons. These Journeys cover topics such as identity, relationships, forgiveness, temptation, purpose, and spiritual growth. We’ve also created weekly handouts, a Journey Guide, resources, and an entirely new visual identity for the program—a complete rebranding!
And we’re still developing, changing, and adding. With input from the entire group, we’ve been working to smooth out the wrinkles so that Living Hope can help anyone who walks through the door.
So join us! There’s something at LIVING HOPE for everyone!

I’m asking for prayer that God may open some doors for me in the form of employment opportunities so that I may be able to work part-time and start earning an income. I praise God for giving me the opportunity to volunteer and serve others at the Mustard Seed a couple times a week- it’s rewarding and energizing for me!
